Santo Domingo’s Malecón, with its breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea, is one of the most iconic locations in the Dominican Republic. However, despite its natural beauty, this coastal stretch is often marred by the irresponsibility of its visitors and pollution from various sources. In this article, I will share my personal experience of cleaning the Malecón’s beaches from Plaza Juan Varón to Playa Güibia and reflect on the importance of caring for our environment and educating society about environmental responsibility.
A Paradise Island Full of Challenges
The Dominican Republic is a true paradise on Earth, with its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and enviable tropical climate. However, this natural beauty is often tarnished by a lack of environmental awareness and neglect by those who enjoy it. During a recent weekend, I decided to take action and contribute to the preservation of our natural surroundings.
As I found myself collecting garbage along the Malecón in Santo Domingo, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated and express my emotions with strong language. The sight of countless discarded bottles and disposable plates had me genuinely upset. It was disheartening to witness the lack of cleanliness and the negative impact on the environment due to the scattered litter
An Evening of Reflection and Action
My walk began at Plaza Juan Varón, and as I progressed along the Malecón, I couldn’t help but feel sadness at the amount of litter accumulating in the sand and its surroundings. Bottles of alcoholic beverages, disposable cups, and plates were some of the most common items I encountered. The evidence of a lack of environmental education and civic responsibility was clear.
I couldn’t help but feel a mix of anger and sadness at how some of my fellow countrymen were contributing to this environmental degradation. I wanted to vent my frustration in videos, but I reminded myself that the solution was not in confrontation but in education and positive action.
Every Small Gesture Counts
I decided to take action instead of just complaining. Armed with a black garbage bag, I began picking up the litter. I wasn’t alone in my efforts, as soon other passersby joined me. Together, we made a small but significant difference.
Every bottle picked up, every cup removed from the sand, and every piece of trash eliminated was a reminder that each of us can make a difference. Sometimes, it’s necessary to take the first step and lead by example.
Conclusions
My experience of cleaning Santo Domingo’s Malecón was a reminder that we all have a role to play in preserving our environment. Despite the sadness and frustration that can arise from witnessing pollution, positive action and education are the keys to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
I hope that my small effort inspires others to join in the fight to keep our beaches and our country clean and beautiful. Our Dominican Republic deserves to be treated with the respect and love it deserves.
